Insight from My 6 Year Old Son

Last week at Pogy’s Subs, on our table there was a laminated card that had this saying:

Dear God,
So far today I’ve done all right.  I haven’t gossiped, I haven’t lost my temper, I haven’t lied or cheated.  I haven’t been greedy, or grumpy, nasty, selfish, or overindulgent.  I’m very thankful for that, but, in a few minutes, Lord, I’m going to get out of bed.  And from then on I’m probably going to need a lot more help.  Amen.

We all smiled after we finished reading it…except my 6 year old son.  He had a serious look on his face while he claimed, "That’s not true!"  We asked, "What do you mean?"  He explained, "This person said she hasn’t done anything bad so far but that’s not true.  She has been boasting."  Wow…my son had a deep thought!  It is often easy for us to think that we are doing all right or that we are doing better than that person or those people.  We need to be very careful not to let pride creep in our heart and mind.  Pride pushes God aside; God hates pride.

"As it is, you boast and brag.  All such boasting is evil." James 4:16

"This is what the Lord says: ‘Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom or the strong man boast of his strength or the rich man boast of his riches, but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,’ declares the Lord" Jeremiah 9:23-24

"If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness.  ….But He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’  Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me."  2Corinthians 11:30, 12:9

"Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything, for ourselves, but our competence comes from God." 2 Corinthians 3:5

By the way, we can sin even when we’re still lying in bed.  We need to remember to take captive our every thought to make it obedient to Christ….in bed and out of bed.

DVD Review and Giveaway: A Mile in His Shoes

A Mile in His Shoes is a family-friendly movie (PG) about a young man diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome (a form of autism) and how his God-given talent (his amazing throwing ability) helps him and others. It's about overcoming challenges in life. It is based on the book "The Legend of Mickey Tussler" (a true story). It's directed by William Dear, the director of "Angels In the Outfield." It stars Dean Cain who plays Arthur Murphy, a baseball coach and Luke Schroder who plays Mickey, the main character. Excellent performances! My family and I enjoyed this movie. It spoke to my heart deeply because one of my kids has symptoms that are similar to Asperger's Syndrome but the doctors diagnosed him with anxiety disorder, instead. My son is very athletic and great with numbers like Mickey. He is also sensitive to noise and crowds like Mickey. When Coach Murphy sees Mickey (a farmer boy) throw apples at a bucket for his pigs, he knows that he has just fo...

Book Review: Immeasurably More: 100 Devotions on God's Extravagant Grace by Deb Burma

I was excited to review this devotional book for 3 reasons: 1. I collect devotional books, 2. I'm a big fan of God's grace, and 3. The theme of our church's women retreat this year (this weekend) is Ephesians 3: 20-21, " Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory ." which is also the theme for this book. Immeasurably More is a beautiful and meaningful devotional journal. It has 100 devotions organized into 10 different topics (grace, love, power, provision, purpose, peace, joy, gifts, rest, and life). Each devotion starts with Scriptures and ends with journaling and prayer prompts. This journal can be used individually or in a group study.  I have been blessed and refreshed by God's wondrous truths and Godly insights found in this book. These encouraging, inspiring devotions invite readers to bask in God's goodness and to experience His never-ending, jaw-drop...
