Book Review and Giveaway: The 5 Love Languages of Children

About the Book:
To be their best, children need to feel loved. But if you and your child speak different love languages, your affection might get lost in translation, affecting the child’s attitude, behavior, and development. Dr. Gary Chapman’s groundbreaking Five Love Languages series has helped millions of couples communicate love more clearly, and Dr. Ross Campbell M.D. has applied the innovative system to children as well. The 5 Love Languages of Children gives practical suggestions for learning how your children interpret love and creating a sense of security in which they can thrive.

My Thoughts and Review:
Most parents genuinely love their kids but why some kids don't feel loved by their parents. Could it be that they speak different languages to each other? This is an informational and insightful book that helps parents understand their kids better and communicate love to their kids in a way that means the most to them. The most fundamental thing children need from their parents is unconditional love! That unconditional love can be expressed in 5 love languages: physical touch, words of affirmation, quality time, gifts, and acts of service. Kids need their emotional tank filled to survive and thrive. But parents need to fill with the right kind; otherwise, it won't work as well. Love languages also affect how children react to different discipline methods and how they learn. The book also includes speaking the love languages in single-parent families, speaking the love languages in marriage, a chapter on anger, and the Love Language Mystery Game. Excellent parenting resource!

"Only the child who feels genuinely loved and cared for can do her best. You can truly love your child, but unless she feels it--unless you speak the love language that communicates to her your love--she will not feel loved." (p.17)
"Don't be a victim of the urgent. In the long run, much of what seems so pressing right now won't even matter. What you do with your children will matter forever." (p.69)
"A child's emotional maturation affects everything else--his self-esteem, emotional security, ability to cope with stress and change, ability to socialize, and the ability to learn." (p.149)

My youngest boy (10) is already familiar with the NIV Bible. I can't wait to give him this NIV Boys Bible for his 11th birthday. There are several interesting and useful features that aim to get boys' attention such as Makin' It Real (real-life applications, especially in guys' lives) and Grossology (something that wouldn't work well in a girls' Bible :)). I'm glad to see that it includes the "Words to Live By" sections that encourage readers to memorize God's Word. At the back of the Bible, you will also find a table of weights and measures, the ABCs of becoming a Christian, a checklist for daily Bible reading if you plan to read the entire Bible in a year, promises from the Bible, a topical index to help you find relevant verses to all kinds of topics, and journaling pages. This NIV Boys Bible would make a great gift for preteen boys!
