Recap 2016

2016 has been a year of healing and new experiences.

1. In January, my left eye was practically blind due to vitreous hemorrhage. God graciously gave me back my sight.
2. After living with intense (sometimes excruciating) pain for approximately 10 years (or more) due to Adenomyosis, I decided to have a partial hysterectomy (keeping my ovaries and cervix) on March 8th. God blessed me with a successful surgery and a quick recovery. Life with no chronic pain is such a blessing that I never want to take for granted.
3. Alyssa got her driving license on March 25th.
4. On April 9th, Eric, Josiah, and I hiked at Silver Falls.
5. This year, Isaiah raised $2,242 for Steps for Life and won third place in his age group.
6. On May 29th, we (except Alyssa) visited Mirror Lake and Trillium Lake.
7. On June 9th, Josiah had his first job interview with Wendy's and got the job.
8. In June, I had my first jury process experience (although I wasn't selected).
9. Alyssa did an internship as a videographer with OM in El Salvador from June 16 to July 15.
10.  This summer, we painted our house blue with white trim and red door.
11. Eric and I celebrated our 25th anniversary at the beach. We stayed at Esther Lee. We enjoyed our first tandem-kayaking.
12. God saved Eric from a major accident on the highway coming home from work on September 27th.
13. We (except Josiah) went through our first corn maze on October 29th.
14. In December, our whole family started playing Words With Friends on our iphones and ipad. We are quite competitive :).
15. Alyssa got her ears pierced and got contact lens.
16. Alyssa attended Cru Winter Conference in Portland from December 28 to January 1.

P.S. This is also a year of replacements and additions: new refrigerator, washing machine (used), new TV (50" Samsung...smart one), 2 new electric heaters, (used) Xbox, camera (used Nikon D3200), (used) china hutch, and (used) two green flowery chairs.

Note: Check out Josiah's YouTube channel. This year, he has added 10 videos. Some of his piano covers include Someone Like You (Adele)Yesterday (The Beatles)Here Comes the Sun (The Beatles)Kindergarten Cop ThemeGod Help the Outcasts (from The Hunchback of Notre Dame), Billy Jean (Michael Jackson), and New York State of Mind (Billy Joel)This one is one of his original compositions.

Review and Giveaway: The JESUS Film

Did you know that The JESUS Film is the most watched (having been viewed billions of times) and most translated film (available in 1,197 languages)? It was made in 1979. In honor of its 35th anniversary (in 2014), The JESUS Film has been fully restored and remastered in high-definition with a complete new musical score in Dolby 5.1 surround sound. And for the first time in history, the film has been available on streaming. Our family has been long-time supporters of CRU's The JESUS Film ministries.  They have been doing a wonderful job reaching the unreached with the Gospel of Jesus Christ through this amazing film. One of the greatest evangelical tools ever!

I watched The JESUS Film once a long time ago and I just watched it again. In my opinion, it's the most impactful film of all time because it tells the greatest story of all time. More than 200 million people worldwide have come to faith in Jesus Christ after viewing The JESUS Film! The JESUS Film covers the creation, the curse, the foreshadowing of Christ's sacrifice through the account of Abraham and Isaac, the prophecies regarding Jesus Christ, and Christ's birth, ministry, death, & resurrection as recorded in the Gospel of Luke. It's Biblically accurate and culturally accurate. I highly recommend this classic film to everyone! The JESUS Film DVD also includes bonus features: The Making of 'The JESUS Film' and The Impact of 'The JESUS Film'. The DVD has subtitles in 9 languages: English, Spanish, French, Mandarin Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Arabic, German, and Japanese.

Review and Giveaway: Bible Journaling Kit

Update: The giveaway winner was randomly chosen using random.org. The winner is Lindy Davis. Congratulations!

I love to highlight my Bible and write down Bible verses and prayers in my journal. I like to personalize God's love letter to me. This Bible journaling kit includes 1 pouch with adjustable strap, 1 journaling pen, 8 colored pencil twists (red, orange, green, blue, purple, yellow, brown, and gray), 4 sheets of word stickers, 4 sheets of alphabet stickers, 24 tab stickers, and 1 ruled page protector mat with tracing lines. The lovely pouch is green with Philippians 4:8 on the front. It can hold all the supplies in the kit except the ruled page protector mat. I have enjoyed using the kit in my Bible and my journal. The colored pencils are easy to use (just twist the bottom) and do not need to be sharpened. I color-coded my favorite verses. For example, red is used for verses about love, green is used for verses about God's promises and hope, blue is used for verses about faith, and orange is used for verses about joy. Colorful verses do stand out. Stickers are fun. Tab stickers (such as "Favorite", "Promise", "Grace", "Faith", and "Fear Not") are useful; they help me quickly find what I'm looking for. Some examples of word stickers are "I Am Not Alone", "I love this", "When life is hard, remember...", "Dear Lord, make it so", "Think on these things." This Bible journaling kit would make a wonderful gift. It's practical and enjoyable.

Movie Review and Giveaway: To Joey, With Love

Update: The giveaway winner was randomly chosen using random.org. The winner is Amy Campbell. Congratulations!
DVD Artwork
I was given an opportunity to watch a private screening of To Joey, With Love. Wow...I was so moved by this beautiful and heartfelt documentary. I cried, I laughed, and I cried some more. To Joey, With Love was written, filmed, and directed by Rory Feek.

This film is Rory's loving tribute to his wife, Joey. It chronicles their journey from Joey's pregnancy and the birth of their daughter, Indiana, who was born with Down Syndrome, through Joey's struggle with cervical cancer and the end of her life. Joey and Rory were country music vocal duo and songwriters. They were married in 2002. In 2014, they decided to take a year off their tour to get ready for their baby. They had no idea what they would be facing in the days ahead. At that same time, Rory started his blog, "This Life I Live" where he has been writing about his family life on a small farm south of Nashville. The film is full of sadness yet full of love, faith, and hope. Through their pain and suffering, both Joey and Rory stay steadfast in trusting God, in loving each other, and in making the most of their time with their loved ones. Their daughter, Indiana, is adorable and brings much needed joy to her parents. One of my favorite scenes in the film is when Joey (in spite of being quite ill) was ironing Rory's shirt because she enjoyed doing a simple task that she could still do as a wife. To Joey, With Love is a touching, tender love story that will inspire you to live each day more intentionally with a thankful heart. I highly recommend it to everyone! I love it so much that I already pre-ordered a DVD :). This film reminds me to celebrate and capture the big and small moments in everyday life. Each day with my family is a gift from God that I gratefully cherish! Life is short; may we never take our loved ones for granted!

"As I go through all this footage that I filmed over the past couple years, I can see now why she had no regrets in the end. How could she? She was fully present. Fully in the moment." (Rory Feek)

"God only gives each of us a certain amount of time to be on this earth and every day when we wake up, we get to decide how we are going to spend those precious minutes and hours." (Rory Feek)

"God gives us 'new eyes' each day, and the opportunity to see the good in life-to experience all the joy that He is trying to show us." (Rory Feek)

Note: To Joey, With Love will be available on DVD December
20th. You can pre-order now.
And if you prefer movies on iTunes,
To Joey, With Love will be available for download there on

Book Review: The Most Wonderful Time of the Year by Ace Collins

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Christmas is truly the most wonderful time of the year :)! Without the birth of Jesus, we wouldn't have our Savior, salvation, or the gospel. In December each year, Christians around the world joyfully anticipate the celebration of Christ's birth. Do not let your chaotic calendars take away the joy and wonder of the season. Pause and focus on what really matters. This book consists of 31-day devotionals for the month of December, stories behind Christmas carols, traditions and symbols, recipes, and homemade gift ideas such as Birdseed Christmas Ornaments, Whipped White Chocolate Body Butter, and Lemon Beeswax Candles. We are usually busy preparing many things for Christmas. Shopping. Decorating. Baking. But often we forget about preparing our hearts. This book helps prepare our hearts and turn our attention to Jesus Christ, the Reason for the season. Starting with Scripture, each devotional is short and concise, yet insightful. I love Christmas songs so I really appreciate the lyrics and the stories behind the songs. I look forward to trying out several recipes. They sound so yummy, especially Sugar Cookie Truffles, Eggnog Snickerdoodles, and Pecan Snowball Cookies. This is a book that I'll keep coming back to year after year. If you want to have a Christ-centered Christmas season, check this delightful book out! It would also make a wonderful Christmas gift.

Review: Quest: Parenting in a Sexualized Culture

No one denies that our culture increasingly brings about sexual distractions, temptations, and pressures upon our families, especially children and teens. We parents must be wise, vigilant, and intentional in our parenting. Quest: Parenting in a Sexualized Culture is designed to help equip and encourage parents in informing and training their children about sex, purity, and technology. Quest is a 4 module small group video teaching series about parenting in a sexualized digital age. It includes a study book, a leader's guide, and a DVD. The DVD has four sessions: The Foundation (A teaching and discussion on what the Bible informs us about God's design and purpose for sexuality), The Conversation (Strategies to help parents create a lifelong, healthy dialogue with their kids about sex), The Technology (A discussion about strategies to create safer and more accountable tech use in your home to help your family thrive), and The Legacy (A teaching about the importance of modeling sexual purity and taking the long view with respect to raising your kids in a biblical, grace-based manner in the midst of a sexualized culture). There are two speakers on the DVD: Noel Bouche and Dan Martin. Both are great at explaining and teaching with compassion and grace. They share Biblical principles, practical advice, and personal experiences. From Quest, you will learn about God's story of sex, stewardship, the 4 P's (pleasure, procreation, protection, and proclamation), purity, how to combat the lies of the sexualized culture, 5 elements of a successful tech strategy for your family, missional parenting, and more. The study book also has Appendix A: Age Appropriate Equipping Teaching Points, Appendix B: Safe-use Agreement, and Appendix C: Answers to a Few Frequently Asked Questions.

I love how they define purity: "Purity is not an accomplishment. It is a relationship with the One who is pure." Essentially, to pursue purity, one must pursue Christ. "The pursuit of purity is about equipping our kids for a life-long relationship with the One who makes them pure." Another excellent quote is "Sex is a covenantal identity out of which flows love, joy, and faithfulness." Quest offers us parents hope and practical ways to guide our children regarding sex and purity from Biblical perspective with clarity, creativity, and consistency. Quest reminds parents to be the source of loving and truthful information that children feel safe to come to. And Quest leads parents to embrace discipleship and parent their children's heart by protecting, equipping, and modeling. This is a valuable, helpful resource for a group study for parents. I highly recommend it! It's indeed very important to help our children thrive (not just survive) in a sexually exploitative world.

"We should note that pureHOPE's ministry is built around the core belief that a pure life is rooted in faith in Christ and sustained by prayer, understanding, resolve, and engagement." (p. 5)

Book Review and Giveaway: Parenting--14 Gospel Principles by Paul David Tripp

Parenting is the most rewarding yet most challenging job in the world! This book helps readers see parenting in light of the gospel. It's unlike other parenting books. It's not about how-to, but rather about what and why. It's about the essence of Christian parenting. "This book is meant to give you vision, motivation, renewed strength, and the rest of heart that every parent needs. It is written to give you the big gospel picture of the task to which your Savior has called you." (p. 13) The book covers 14 gospel principles that give parents important foundation to be God's effective ambassadors, representing God's message, methods, and character. We parents are called to be daily instruments of God's forgiving, rescuing, transforming, and delivering grace in the lives of our children. The theme that runs through the whole book is grace-centered, grace-infused parenting. Another message you will see over and over again in this book is: we (parents) are more like our children than unlike them. We, too, need to be rescued from ourselves.

I find this book to be therapeutic. When I read it, I felt convicted and comforted at the same time. Even though I've failed countless times in my parenting, God, by His inexhaustible grace, continues to use me and transform me and my children. Parenting is such an important work because God has designed us to be His tools in creating God-consciousness and God-submission in our children. We must live the gospel out with gratitude and joy in front of our children so that our children may desire the gospel of God's grace for themselves. The author points out that parenting work needs to focus on the heart of a child, not on the outward behaviors. I really appreciate all the Biblical wisdom and insights from Paul David Tripp. You can tell how much I love a book by how many quotes I include in my review :). I highly recommend this book to all parents! It is one of the very best parenting resources available.

"God calls unable people to do important things because ultimately what he's working on is not your immediate success, but that you would come to know him, to love him, to rest in his grace, and to live for his glory." (p. 35)

"Humble, confessing parents encourage their children to be humble and confessing too, and the result is that they have many opportunities to talk about the rescuing love of Jesus." (p. 40)

"Remember, the greatest danger to your child is not the evil outside them; it's the sin inside them that is the greatest of all threats to their well-being." (p. 51)

"As a parent, you are not called to just enforce God's law in the lives of your children, but also to constantly exhibit and teach God's grace to them as well." (p. 52)

"Parenting is not about exercising power for change in your children. Parenting is about your humble faithfulness in being willing to participate in God's work of change for the sake of your children. " (p. 61)

"Good parenting lives at the intersection of a humble admission of personal powerlessness and a confident rest in the power and grace of God." (p. 69)

"What is obedience? It's a willing submission of my heart to the authorities that God has placed in my life." (p. 119)

"Our children need the security of faithful, consistent, firm, uncompromising, and loving authority--authority that is motivated by and tempered by grace." (p. 120)

"There is a daily war that is being fought on the turf of the hearts of your children. It's a war for control. Will the heart of your child be controlled by love for the Creator (worship) or by craving something in the creation (idolatry)?" (p. 142)

"There is no more important function for a parent than this: to lovingly and patiently bring our children to the point where they too cry out for God's mercy. Crying out for God's mercy happens only when you have acknowledged the sin that is inside you from which you are not able to free yourself." (p. 172)

Book Review: The 10 Myths of Teen Dating by Daniel Anderson and Jacquelyn Anderson

Parenting is hard enough but it gets scary and more challenging when your daughter starts dating. It's definitely a jungle out there. You want to protect her from mistakes and heartaches. But how? This book is a useful guide for parents who want to help their daughters date smart and avoid making mistakes. Most likely, they will still make some mistakes and/or experience heartaches but hopefully, the pain and mistakes are minimal when they are well equipped in advance. The author, Daniel Anderson, is a father, husband, and high school teacher who has had a front row seat to real life problems among teens who embrace faulty ideas/beliefs/assumptions about dating. He wrote this book with his twenty-something daughter (also teacher) who offers valuable insights from a girl's perspective. The book covers 10 dating myths (lies) that lead young people to disaster and misery in their relationships. Each chapter ends with Questions for Reflection and Questions for You and Your Daughter to Discuss. The book talks about pressures from wrong thinking such as FOMO ("fear of missing out") and YOLO ("you only live once"), wrong roads to happiness, the pitfalls of following one's heart, the difference between value and self-esteem, the difference between boy's brain and girl's brain, the distorted view of love and sex, the consequences of TMTS (too much too soon) relationships, stupid sacrifices, the terrible cycle of breaking up and getting back together, abuse, the problem with rebound relationships, healthy vs. unhealthy dating patterns, and more.

I'm so thankful that my daughter didn't date when she was a teen. Homeschooling helps in that regard. However, lots of the information in this book still apply to her now that she is 23 and in college. I really appreciate the practical and insightful advice, supported by statistics, research data, and personal testimonies. If we parents don't give our children the right information, don't expect them to get it from school, friends, movies, TV shows, music, etc. They will surely be misguided. Peer pressure, corrupted culture, temptations, and desires are strong forces that try to pull them in the wrong direction. Parents must help guide and prepare their daughters to date smart, value her own worth, realize serious consequences of premarital sex, and know that what they do now while dating will affect their future happiness. And pray for your daughters to have Godly wisdom and discernment and strength to make wise/right choices. I highly recommend this important resource to all parents who want to help their daughters through the dating years. A wonderful wealth of much-needed information!

"When a girl is trapped in the on-again, off-again relationship, it fosters a dangerous dependency. In the best of circumstances this dependency weakens a young woman and robs her of her value as she begins to define herself by the status of the relationship." (p. 172)

"This maxim is very true after a breakup: Emotional Pain + Rational Thought = Learning" (p. 213)

About the authors:

Daniel Anderson is a former college All-American basketball player, an expert educator, and a father of two grown daughters and a son. As a veteran high school teacher in the public school system, Daniel was troubled by how his students approached dating and relationships. He and his daughter, Jacquelyn Anderson---a twenty something and also a high school teacher---decided to address this need by equipping parents with The 10 Myths of Teen Dating, their first book together. Daniel and Jacquelyn both make their home in Portland, Oregon.

DVD Review: When Calls the Heart--Hearts In Question

When Calls The Heart: Hearts In Question

When Calls the Heart series is a wonderful romantic adventure drama series about life on the frontier, inspired by Janette Oke's novel. Hearts In Question is Season 3's 5th DVD. Jack Thornton (Daniel Lissing)'s mother, Charlotte (Brooke Shields) came to Hope Valley to pay him a surprise visit. She stays with Elizabeth (Erin Krakow) and tries to help Elizabeth improve her cooking and housekeeping skills. Elizabeth finds it difficult to live up to Charlotte's expectations. As Rosemary is busy and stressed about getting everything ready and perfect for her wedding to Lee, she becomes fussy and demanding. The relationship between Abigail (Lori Loughlin) and Pastor Frank is blossoming. Something fishy about Henry Gowen's finances causes Bill Avery (Jack Wagner) and Jack to start investigating. Henry convinces Nora to leave Hope Valley with him in a hurry during a storm and thus puts their lives in danger. Tragedy strikes when a mining town nearby is hit with flood and mudslide. The settlers have to evacuate due to the threat of the flood. I really enjoyed this DVD and was so touched that I cried. I love how everybody pitches in to help those in need. Teamwork. Generosity. Sacrifice. Prayer. Selfless acts of service. A family-friendly show with Biblical values such as this one is so rare nowadays. The Rosemary-Lee's wedding is one of my favorite highlights! I highly recommend this DVD and the whole series. Entertaining and encouraging!

Book Review: Experiencing God Through His Names

In the Bible, names are very important. They often reflect the characteristic attributes about the persons. If you want to know God more/better, take time to study His names. God reveals His character/attributes by referring to Himself by various Names. He wants us to know and understand Who He is, what He does, and how we should relate to Him. I love studying the names of God and I collect devotionals so I was glad to have an opportunity to review this book. Experiencing God Through His Names is a 31-day devotional that helps readers understand and appreciate 31 different names of God. It's an easy read; each day's devotion is only 2-3 pages long. The author shares from her own experiences how each name of God has meant to her personally. Each devotion concludes with a prayer.

Who is God to you? Elohim (The Creator). El Shaddai (The All-Sufficient One). Adonai (Lord and Master). Abba (Father). You may be familiar with these. But God is so much more! He is also Jehovah M'Kaddesh (The Lord Who Sanctifies), El Kanna (the Jealous God), El Roi (the God Who Sees), Jehovah Rapha (the Lord Who Heals), Jehovah Tsidkenu (the Lord Our Righteousness), Zur (God our Rock), and more. When you reflect upon these truths about God, your relationship with Him will be deepened and your faith will be strengthened. Your hearts and mind will be uplifted. You will be reminded of God's love, power, and faithfulness. I enjoyed all the Biblical truths, practical insights, and personal stories shared in this book. I highly recommend it! Prepare to discover God's character in fresh ways, grow closer to Him, and experience Him more intimately!

In “A Predicament of Biblical Proportions” he envisions wacky worst-case encounters with townsfolk who seem like mobsters, snoops and fairy-tale tyrants—until he gets to know them. He’s also a little confused about Bring Your Bible to School Day. What’s it about? Should he participate? See Odyssey through Buddy’s eyes in this witty celebration of religious freedom.

CD Review and Giveaway: Live On Forever by The Afters

Live On Forever
Live on Forever is the newest album from The Afters. The story behind this album is very inspiring. They have turned their season of tragedy into a message of hope and triumph. Their songs remind listeners to embrace eternal perspective and blessed assurance of Heaven. Our trials and sufferings are temporary; we get to live on forever with God. The songs in this album are fresh, energetic, uplifting, and encouraging. They celebrate God's faithfulness and God's promises. This album invites listeners to find strength in God and to keep holding on to Christ. Don't give up. Don't give in. Stand up against fear; stay strong & courageous to fight battles because God has your back.

This album has 10 songs:
1. Shadows
2. Battles
3. Sunrise
4. Time of My Life
5. Wake Up My Heart
6. Live On Forever
7. Eyes of a Believer
8. Survivors
9. Legends
10. When You're With Me

I enjoyed listening to the album. My favorite songs are Battles, Wake Up My Heart, Live On Forever, and When You're With Me. Battles is an anthem of faith. Wake Up My Heart is a reflective song of prayer. I love the echo effect on Live On Forever, a song about Heaven and eternity. When You're With Me is a sweet love song with lovely violin sound. I also like Sunrise which has beautiful music and comforting message. Several songs have fun, joyful beat that makes me want to dance :). Hope you'll check this album out and get pumped up to face any challenges with God-confidence and live fearlessly forever!
