Movie Review: Unsung Hero Plus $10 Amazon Gift Card Giveaway

I've always loved movies based on true stories. I've enjoyed the music by Rebecca St. James and For King & Country. With that combination, I was so excited to review Unsung Hero, the remarkable true story of the Smallbone family (Rebecca St. James, Joel & Luke Smallbone of For King & Country are three of their 7 children). It's an inspiring film about their journey from the Land Down Under to the Land of the Free and all the challenges & struggles they have to face & overcome. When David Smallbone (Dad)'s music company fails and goes bankrupt, he moves his family from Australia to America, with high hopes for a better future. However, they soon experience hardships, poverty, shame, loss, sorrow, disappointment, discouragement, and disagreement (within the family). But they cling to God, one another, and prayer. I love their family's way of organizing their prayer cards on the wall into 2 columns: the left one is for "Please" (prayer requests) and the right one is for "Thank You" (prayers answered).

In addition to co-writing and co-directing this film, Joel Smallbone also stars in it as his real-life father, David Smallbone. He did a fantastic job. The Australian actress who plays the mum, Daisy Betts, was also fabulous. Rebecca St. James even made an appearance briefly as a flight attendant. Watch the movie closely and see if you could spot Candace Cameron Bure (from Full House and Fuller House). Of course, the music in this film is outstanding :).

Unsung Hero highlights Helen Smallbone (mum)'s faith and tenacity against all odds and the role she plays as the glue that holds the family together by encouraging her husband and children to trust God and persevere. I highly recommend this beautiful film about faith that is tested and family that is resolved to be brave together through it all. It's an amazing testimony to our awesome God's guidance, provision, and faithfulness. The movie reminds us all to never give up and never give in when life is difficult because we can always trust and rely on God to help carry us through. Life is an adventure. God is sufficient. God makes all things beautiful in His time. I encourage you to go see Unsung Hero in theaters starting tomorrow (April 26th).

  1. My wife grew up listening to RSJ! Not sure what her favorite song was, though. Burn the Ships is a good one by FK+C, though. actsingdance4Christ@gmail.com

  2. What I can say is it ranks up there with The Sound Of Music. We need more good movies like this out there. Rebecca St James, Joel, and Luke & the whole Smallbone family stole my heart.
Blessed Be your Name is one Rebecca sings whether she wrote it or not is a favorite.

DVD Review and Giveaway: A Mile in His Shoes

A Mile in His Shoes is a family-friendly movie (PG) about a young man diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome (a form of autism) and how his God-given talent (his amazing throwing ability) helps him and others. It's about overcoming challenges in life. It is based on the book "The Legend of Mickey Tussler" (a true story). It's directed by William Dear, the director of "Angels In the Outfield." It stars Dean Cain who plays Arthur Murphy, a baseball coach and Luke Schroder who plays Mickey, the main character. Excellent performances! My family and I enjoyed this movie. It spoke to my heart deeply because one of my kids has symptoms that are similar to Asperger's Syndrome but the doctors diagnosed him with anxiety disorder, instead. My son is very athletic and great with numbers like Mickey. He is also sensitive to noise and crowds like Mickey. When Coach Murphy sees Mickey (a farmer boy) throw apples at a bucket for his pigs, he knows that he has just fo...
